let’s cut my hair

I need a haircut. Scratch that. I need a hairstyle.

I swore the last time I went long, I was sure I’d stay here for at least a decade. It’s been two years, and every time I get near a pair of scissors my fingers start to itch. It’s getting so bad I’m ready to let Junie have a go.

So two weeks ago I was in Costco and ran into a girl from the blogosphere. She’s got the cutest, hippest hair I’ve seen in ages–uber blond with a sassy pink streak to die for. It made my old long layered look feel frumpy, brassy and outdated. Suddenly I knew: I need a haircut. A good haircut. A sassy haircut.

A short haircut.

And there, my friends, lies the problem. My husband supports just about everything I do with my style. Leggings and stiletto’s? Go for it. Bell bottom trousers? Fantastic. Snuggies? Hey, as long as there’s nothing underneath, he’d let me wear just about anything I wanted.

But he loves. Long. Hair.

I first fell into this long style by sheer accident. My hair all fell out when June hit about six months, and by the end of the first year I literally had to wear hats to cover up my scalp. I met a darling hair girl in the grocery store who took pity on me and hooked me up with a reem of extensions that took me from chemo survivor to Dancing with the Stars in six snaps and a teasing comb. It took two years, but I finally hit the point where my hair is thick and lovely and long without any artificial help–and I hate it.

So today I called that cute, sassy girl from Costco (who happens to do hair) and made myself an appointment. Then I got online and started googling styles. After an hour, I think I’ve got a perfect solution that will satisfy me and fool my husband. We’ll see if it works out, I’ve got an appointment tomorrow. Fingers crossed…we’ll post pictures if it’s good.

Comments

  1. I just chopped my hair. Some say it’s a bad idea when you are still pretty postpartum and the hormones are making you crazy. But I love it. My husband is a long hair guy, too…but he bought an Xbox, so he doesn’t have a say in it! lol. (To him, I guess short hair is better than the dreadlocks that I -want- to have! lol)

  2. Can’t wait to see it! You know me–I’m a huge fan of short hair. Perhaps I need a pink streak next?

  3. Mullet??? Party in the back for him, pin it up to short for you!

I want to cut mine too, but my husband likes it long (and without bangs – that part is not negotiable in his eyes) and unfortunately he already had the xbox AND he shaved his goatee and keeps shaving it every day just for me, so I’m keeping my hair long for now. Although, I might try asking him again – I died it black for Halloween and it’s HIDEOUS and taking forever to wash out and well, short would be less hideous because there’d be less hair, right?

  4. I am excited! You are so cute and sassy, that I think you can totally pull off a short style. But you were looking very hot this weekend, extensions and all. I also think that a crying baby looks really good on you.

  5. I can’t wait to see you tomorrow! And I am glad you are bringing some pictures! It helps to make sure we’re both on the same page!

  6. After two years of growing it out I finally had my long hair back. I got an itch a month ago and cut 6 inches off. I started regretting it this week. lol I guess it will grow back.

  7. I have been wearing some seriously bad hair lately and desperately need an intervention. I like short hair on other women, but whenever I cut my hair short it just gets bigger and bigger and ends up taking more time/effort to deflate. So now I don’t know what to do. I’ve already done the pink streak thing. Maybe red and green for Christmas? I’m all about the holidays. ;o)

  8. I’m excited for you! I’m keeping the hair long for two reasons at the moment: Hubby likes it long, and short hair cuts require maintenance. Which requires money.
I’m reveling in the fact that your hair will be short, do you mind if I live vicariously through your hair for a moment?

  9. Maybe it would be a good idea to cut it anyway if you’re going to lose a lot of hair anyway? I always lose a ton of hair postpartum and I LOVED have a super short cut! And it helps to not have a ton of hair when its short, otherwise its all afro-ish. 🙂 Good luck, can’t wait to see the pictures!

  10. My husband also likes my hair long… so I keep it that way. The things we do for love. Next he is going to expect me to clean the bathtub.

  11. Oh, you go!! I finally got mine cut short a few weeks ago and I love it!! Absolutely no regrets. My husband also likes long hair, however, he also hates the fact that I dye it. So, I cut all the color out and am grey now. He loves the fact that I have grey hair and I love the fact that it is short, cute and sassy. Sometimes, you just have to do what makes you feel good. When you feel good about yourself, it makes everything so much easier. As for me, I wish I had done this years ago.

  12. I can’t wait to see it!

  13. It will look beautiful 🙂 no matter how you cut it! Ive been telliing my self for monts i need a hair cut as well, I just don’t feel like spending the money so I put it off and put it off and right now ive seriously contemplated chopping it with kitchen shears

  14. Can’t wait to see the end result. You’ll have to post before & after pix so that we can all “ooh & aaahh” w/ you. I’m sure your hair will look darling!

  15. I grew my hair out for my husband and keep it long for me. It is SO much easier for me to make my hair look good long because it’s all coarse and wavy. If my hair’s short, it’s just poofy and gross. I am in DESPERATE need of a good dye job, though. I am BLONDE, dangit, not light brown/strawberry/whatever I have going on. I’m buying a box today.

Can’t WAIT to see pics. You’ll totally pull it off.

  16. Stephanie Hess says:

Oh you are going to look so cute! Sierra is my sister in law and she does my hair. I always love when I leave the salon. I smell good and I feel great. I got the pink streak in my hair too and I loved it. I had to take it out for work but I loved it while I had it. Sierra will take good care of you and I can’t wait to see pictures! I talked to her today and she told me you were coming in. I might have to come in and meet you. 😉 Anyways, I am sure it will be great and your husband will love it!

  17. Go For IT! I am a big fan of change. Though my husband is not. My hair was SHORT when he married me so I use that as an excuse to grow out my hair and cut it off at will. This last time was harder for him. If I feel sexier isn’t that a good thing. I guess I need to try the snuggie as lingere!!

I truly enjoyed talking with you at bloggybootcamp. You are now my mentor wether you want to be or not! Can’t wait to see the hair.

  18. I can’t wait to see the “new do”! I need inspiration – I should introduce myself as a cut it/hate it/grow it out kind of girl. Mostly I jam it all into a clip and then when I bump into someone I know out and about I try to remember if I even brushed my hair at all that morning! good luck!

  19. I think your hair is gorgeous, but I’m sure you’ll be just as cute with a new “do”. Can’t wait to see it! 🙂

  20. First off my thoughts are with you over your battle with the big C! My self I went thru level 3 pre cervical cancer. All fine now. Ladies get your pap! Now as for your hair… Kiss your man let him touch your hair and have a good cry. THEN GO FOR IT!!! It will grow back!!!
